Design principles of stage suspender

Stage suspenders can be divided into: fireproof curtain suspender, front curtain suspender, split curtain, split second curtain (low curtain), edge curtain

Lighting boom, background boom (functional boom), canopy boom, movie screen boom;

 The design sequence typically follows these steps:

 1. Fire curtain: The fire curtain should be closely attached to the proscenium arch; for venues with more than 1500 seats, a fire curtain is required by design;

2. Front curtain (logo):

After the fire curtain, the spacing should be about 300mm; if there is no fire curtain, the spacing should be 200-300mm close to the stage entrance;

3. Opening curtain: The first curtain in the stage performance area, usually close to the front curtain, with a spacing of 200-300mm between them, and a length 2-3 meters longer than the proscenium arch. The overlap between the two curtains is 1-2 meters; various methods such as uniform variable frequency opening and electric lifting can be designed for the opening curtain;

4. Open the second curtain (or the third curtain):

The two-way curtain serves as a dividing screen between the first and second performance areas on the stage. It can divide the first and second performance areas according to a 3:2 ratio. For example, if the stage depth is within 12 meters, two opening curtains can be designed, with the second curtain positioned at 7-8 meters; if the stage depth exceeds 12 meters, two or three curtains can be designed, generally following a 3:2:1 or 2:2:1 layout. The division method can be adjusted according to the content of the stage performance and the requirements of the scenery, and the division ratio should meet aesthetic and practical requirements; for example, if the stage depth is 22 meters, the second curtain can be designed at 9 meters, the third curtain at 18 meters, and the area between 18-22 meters can be used as a scenery area;

5. Edge Curtain: The edge curtain design is used to refine the stage proportions and avoid side stage leaks during curtain opening. The general principle is to maintain a distance of 2-3 meters between two edge curtains. For example, if the stage depth is 22 meters, two curtains are designed at positions 0-9 meters, and one edge curtain can be designed at a distance of 0-3 meters between 0-9 meters, one at 3-6 meters, and one at 6-9 meters (or a split curtain can be used instead, which can be regarded as an edge curtain when retracted). The design between the second and third curtains follows the same method as above;

6. Canopy suspender: The canopy serves as the final curtain of the stage, typically positioned at the back of the stage. Alternatively, a certain space can be reserved between the canopy and the back wall of the stage for stage movement;

7. Film screen boom: The film screen boom is typically designed to be positioned behind the large screen and before the first edge curtain, with a distance of more than 3 meters from the stage proscenium line;

8. Lighting fixture suspender: Lighting fixture suspenders are categorized into top light suspenders, backlight suspenders, and canopy light suspenders;

9. Top light suspension rod: The first set of top light suspension rods is designed behind the main curtain, with a spacing of no less than 300mm from the main curtain; the second set of top light suspension rods is designed behind the edge of the first set, with a spacing of no less than 300mm, and so on; basically ensuring that every two sets of top light suspension rods are evenly spaced at a maximum distance of 3 meters

10. Backlighting poles: The first set of backlighting poles is designed in front of the first edge of the screen, with a spacing of no less than 300mm from the screen; the second set of backlighting poles is designed in front of the second edge of the screen, with a spacing of no less than 300mm from the screen, and so on for the third set...; basically, every two sets of backlighting poles are evenly spaced at a maximum distance of 3 meters;

11. Canopy light suspension rod: It is designed to be positioned 1.5-3 meters away from the canopy. To ensure that the canopy lights can project light evenly across the canopy, the position of the canopy light rod should not be too close to the canopy;

12. Effective light wall: An effective light wall can be designed in the rear area of the canopy light pole, in front of the canopy;

13. Background Suspension Rods: The number and design positions of background suspension rods play a significant role in the performance function of the theater. Generally, multiple background suspension rods are centrally designed behind the canopy light poles, with a minimum distance of 200mm between every two rods. At the same time, background suspension rods can be interspersed between the overhead lights and backlighting, or in any space-available locations; they are distributed at various positions above the entire stage;

14. Side light dragon (or light pole): Designed on the side stage of the stage, it can be installed using a dragon-like structure or a light pole; projecting at a 90-degree angle towards the center of the stage;

15. Column lights: Designed on both sides of the proscenium, projecting at a 45-degree angle towards the center of the stage;

16. Outside the stage: There are mainly face lights and ear lights. Generally, the projection angle of face lights is 45 degrees from the stage entrance, and the same goes for ear lights;  17.  The above are the steps for designing the stage boom: a brief summary: first design the logo and the opening curtain at the proscenium, then design the second and third curtains to divide the stage proportion, and then refine the stage proportion by designing the side curtains to avoid exposure, and then consider designing the overhead and backlighting between the side curtains, and finally, according to the usage function, design the background boom.
